Social Class

Definition

Social class refers to a system of stratification or hierarchy within society where individuals are grouped based on shared characteristics such as wealth, income, education, and occupation. These groupings create distinct layers or classes within society, with people in the same class often sharing similar life experiences, values and lifestyles.

Example

Imagine two friends: Fred and Barney. Fred's parents own a successful tech company, allowing them to live in a wealthy neighborhood, afford private schooling, and access exclusive social networks. On the other hand, Barney's parents work as factory workers, earning modest incomes that limit their ability to provide financial support for higher education or extracurricular activities. Due to their different backgrounds, Fred and Barney experience life differently. Fred may have more opportunities for networking and career advancement, while Barney may face challenges accessing those resources.

Why It Matters

Social class matters because it shapes individuals' worldviews. Social class impacts the social networks to which people have access, and can also impact access to education, healthcare, and job prospects.
