Yerkes-Dodson Law

Definition

The Yerkes-Dodson Law describes how performance on a task improves with increased arousal (or stress) up to a certain point, after which further increases in arousal lead to decreased performance. This means there is an optimal level of arousal for peak performance, and going beyond this point can hinder effectiveness.

Example

You are preparing for an important presentation. At first, feeling a bit stressed helps you focus and work efficiently. Maybe you stay up late reviewing notes or designing the presentation. However, if your stress becomes too high; for example, if you start panicking about failing the exam, you might find it harder to concentrate, make careless mistakes, or even blank out during the test. This is an example of how too much arousal can negatively affect performance.
