Definition
The Cannon-Bard Theory of Emotion, also known as the thalamic theory, suggests that emotions and physical reactions to stimuli occur simultaneously but independently. According to this theory, when you encounter a stimulus (like seeing a snake), your brain processes it through the thalamus, which sends signals to both the cortex (where emotional experiences are generated) and the sympathetic nervous system (which triggers physical reactions such as increased heart rate or sweating). Thus, emotions and physiological responses happen at the same time but do not cause one another.

A you are walking in a park, you suddenly see a snake on the path. According to the Cannon-Bard Theory, your brain processes the sight of the snake simultaneously through two pathways: one leading to the cortex, where you experience fear or anxiety, and the other activating your sympathetic nervous system, which causes your heart rate to increase, your palms to sweat, and your muscles to tense up. These emotional and physical reactions happen at the same time but are not directly caused by each other.
