Definition

General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) refers to a three-stage process describing how the body responds to prolonged stress. Introduced by Hans Selye, it outlines the stages of alarm, resistance, and exhaustion, illustrating the body's attempt to adapt to stressors over time.

Example

You are preparing for an important exam. Initially, you feel alert and focused (alarm stage). As days pass, you maintain study habits despite fatigue (resistance stage). If this continues without rest, you might struggle with concentration and energy, entering exhaustion (exhaustion stage), risking burnout or health issues.
