Self-efficacy refers to your belief in your ability to successfully perform specific tasks or achieve goals. It's about how confident you feel in your skills and capabilities when faced with challenges. Unlike general self-esteem, which is a broad sense of worthiness, self-efficacy is task-specific. It varies depending on the situation.

Example

A student has struggled with public speaking but wants to give a presentation for their class. Initially, they might feel nervous and doubt their ability to do well. However, after practicing several times, receiving positive feedback from friends, and successfully delivering a practice run in front of a small group, the student begins to feel more confident. By the time the actual presentation arrives, they trust in their ability to perform well because they've built self-efficacy through preparation and positive experiences.

Why it Matters

Self-efficacy matters because it influences how you approach challenges, persist through difficulties, and ultimately achieve your goals. When you believe in your abilities, you're more likely to take on challenging tasks, put in the effort needed to succeed, and recover from setbacks.
