The Hawthorne Effect refers to the phenomenon where individuals alter their behavior simply because they are aware that they are being observed. A classic example of the Hawthorne Effect comes from studies conducted at the Hawthorne Works factory in the 1920s and 1930s. Researchers observed workers as they changed various working conditions, such as lighting levels or break schedules, to see how these changes affected productivity. Surprisingly, productivity increased not just because of the specific changes made but primarily because the workers knew they were being watched. This realization led to the identification of the Hawthorne Effect. A modern example could be an office where employees start working more efficiently when management is present or monitoring their work.
