Operant Conditioning
Definition
Operant conditioning is a learning process in which an individual’s behavior is modified by its consequences. It occurs when a person or animal learns to associate specific actions with rewards (reinforcements) or punishments, leading them to repeat desired behaviors or avoid unwanted ones. This concept was famously studied by psychologist B.F. Skinner and is often contrasted with classical conditioning, which focuses on involuntary responses rather than voluntary behaviors.
Example
Imagine a parent who wants their child to complete homework before playing video games. Every time the child finishes their homework, the parent praises them and allows screen time as a reward. Over time, the child learns that completing homework leads to a positive outcome (praise and screen time), so they are more likely to finish their work on time. This is an example of operant conditioning because the behavior (completing homework) is reinforced by a reward, increasing its likelihood in the future.

Operant conditioning matters because it helps us understand how behaviors are shaped and maintained in both individuals and society. It explains why certain actions become habits or why people respond to incentives in specific ways.
