Law of Effect

Definition

The Law of Effect, introduced by psychologist Edward Thorndike in the early 20th century, is a principle in psychology that states behaviors are shaped by their consequences. If a behavior results in a positive outcome (a reward), it is more likely to be repeated in the future. Conversely, if a behavior leads to an unpleasant or negative consequence (punishment), it is less likely to occur again. This law forms the basis of operant conditioning and explains how learning occurs through trial and error.

Example

There is a student who often raises their hand in class to answer questions. If the teacher praises the student each time they provide a correct answer, the student will likely continue raising their hand in the future. On the other hand, if the teacher ignores or scolds the student for incorrect answers, the student might hesitate to participate as much. This scenario illustrates how consequences (praise or criticism) influence the likelihood of repeating a behavior.

Why It Matters

The Law of Effect is crucial because it helps us understand how behaviors are learned and modified over time. By applying this principle, educators, parents, and trainers can design effective strategies to encourage desired behaviors and discourage unwanted ones. For example, teachers can use positive reinforcement (like praise or rewards) to motivate students, while avoiding punishments that might create fear or resentment. Understanding the Law of Effect allows us to shape behavior in a way that promotes learning, cooperation, and personal growth.
