Research Problem

Definition

The issue or topic that a researcher seeks to address.

Example

A researcher is reviewing previous research on social media use, and notices that there has been no research conducted the relationship between social media use and locus of control.

This can be stated as a research problem: "There is limited data available regarding the relationship between social media use and locus of control."

Why It Matters

The research problem is what gives a study its purpose. It helps focus the research and explains why it matters. A clear research problem helps guide everything else — the questions you ask, the methods you use, and the conclusions you draw. Without it, a study can easily drift or lose direction.
