Prefrontal Cortex
Definition
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is the front part of the brain's frontal lobe, located just behind the forehead. It plays a crucial role in higher-order functions such as planning, decision-making, problem-solving, regulating emotions, controlling impulses, and managing social behavior. Essentially, it helps us think before we act, weigh options, and consider consequences. The prefrontal cortex is a part of the larger cerebral cortex, and plays a significant role in executive functions.

Imagine you're at work and your boss asks you to complete an important project by the end of the week. Your prefrontal cortex kicks in as you plan how to approach the task: breaking it into smaller steps, prioritizing deadlines, considering potential challenges, and deciding how much time to dedicate each day. Without this part of your brain, you might rush without a clear strategy or make impulsive decisions that could lead to mistakes.
Why It Matters
The prefrontal cortex is essential for what makes us uniquely human—our ability to think strategically, control our emotions, and interact socially. Damage to the PFC can result in poor decision-making, impulsivity, difficulty planning, and even personality changes. It’s also where much of our executive functioning happens, allowing us to manage complex tasks and adapt to new situations effectively. Without it, everyday life would be chaotic, as we’d struggle with self-control and long-term thinking.
