Construct

Definition

AnA abstractstatistical conceptmeasure usedthat indescribes researchthe (e.g.,extent intelligence,to stress).which two variables are related.

Example

A researcherCorrelation is attemptingmeasured on a scale of -1.0 to identify1.0. Scores closer to zero indicate an insignificant relationship between two variables. Negative scores indicate a negative relationship - one variable increases when the factorsother thatdecreases. contributePositive toscores happiness.indicate Sincea happinesspositive isrelationship. anOne abstractvariable concept, increases itwhen the other increases.

Correlation does not indicate causation.

While there is a constructpositive correlation between job satisfaction and self-esteem, it cannot be determined from the correlation whether one causes the other. It can only be stated that needs to be explicitly defined in order to study it.

This is done by creating an operational definition such as "Happiness is defined according to scores on the Subjectiverelationship Happiness scale, with scores of 22-28 indicating a high level of happiness."exists.

Why Itit Matters

ByCorrelation usingis consistentimportant constructsbecause it helps us spot patterns between variables — like noticing that higher self-esteem often goes hand-in-hand with greater job satisfaction. It doesn’t prove one causes the other, but it gives researchers a starting point for asking deeper questions and operationaldesigning definitions, better a researcher is taking steps to create the conditions necessary for the research to be replicated by others.studies.
