Definition
The sympathetic nervous system is part of the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions. It is responsible for preparing the body to respond to stress or danger, often referred to as the "fight-or-flight" response. When activated, it increases heart rate, dilates pupils, speeds up breathing, and diverts blood flow away from non-essential functions (like digestion) to muscles, allowing the body to react quickly in emergencies.
